Here is the buzz … Sue Halpern has written a book
that is a behind-the-scenes journey into the world of cutting-edge memory
research. Her new book unveils findings about memory loss only now
available to general public. Halpern spent
years in the company of the neuroscientists, pharmacologists, psychologists,
nutritionists, and inventors who are hunting for the genes and molecules, the
drugs and foods, the machines, the prosthetics, the behaviors and therapies
that will stave off Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia and keep our
minds-and memories-intact. Like many of us who have had a relative or
friend succumb to memory loss or Boomer who are getting older, we are hearing
statistics about our own chances of falling victim to dementia, we all worry that
each lapse of memory portends disease. Join us for this special event as Sue Halpern
discusses some of her findings such as:
· What the experts really knew, what
the bench scientists are working on.
· How close science is to a cure, to treatment, to accurate
early diagnosis.
· Whether the crossword puzzles, Sudokus,
and ballroom dancing can really keep us lucid

Betty Friedan once said "Aging is not 'lost youth' but a new stage of opportunity and strength"
The boomer kids are first generation to grow up watching television and experiencing the powerful persuasions of TV programming and advertising. The these kids, born between 1946 - 1964, were influenced by the futuristic world of the Jetsons®, living a life with flying cars, household robots, ubiquitous communication networks all in an "ultra smart" home. As teenagers, the boomers rode with the crew of the Starship Enterprise wondering if the wireless "Beam me up Scotty" device could be designed in their life time.

Assistive technology is any service or tool that helps the elderly or disabled do the activities they have always done but must now do differently. These tools are also sometimes called “adaptive devices.”
Such technology may be something as simple as a walker to make moving around easier or an amplification device to make sounds easier to hear (for talking on the telephone or watching television, for instance). It could also include a magnifying glass that helps someone who has poor vision read the newspaper or a small motor scooter that makes it possible to travel over distances that are too far to walk. In short, anything that helps the elderly continue to participate in daily activities is considered assistive technology.
